A Drill for Handguns

Introduction: El Rey Sol is an enhanced version of the classic El Presidente with a twist to make it more challenging. Targets are at set at 3 different distances and the shot count varies from one target to the next. The ability to adjust your shot cadence is critical to success, particularly when engaging the distant target. Shoot as fast as you can hit! This drill can be shot with both pistols and revolvers. For 5 shot revolvers, the sequence is 2-2-1 rather than 3-2-1.

Objective: The shooter must demonstrate the ability to make combat effective hits on multiple targets in a compressed time frame.

Ammunition Needed: 12 rounds per run

Targets: Any paper or cardboard target with a realistic size high value scoring area (IPSC, IDPA etc.). Three targets will be required

Distance: T1@4 yards, T2@7 yards and T3@ 15 yards. Lateral spread between the targets is 6 feet.

Begin Exercise: The drill will be shot with the handgun concealed from view or from a police duty holster. Load with 6 rounds only and place the handgun in the holster. On signal, draw and fire 3 shots to T1, 2 shots to T2 and 1 shot to T1. RELOAD and fire 3 shots to T3, 2 shots to Ts and 1 shot to T1.

Scoring: This drill was designed for self evaluation purposes. Can you get it done in 15 seconds or less? Less than 20 seconds with a revolver is a pretty good run. Hits outside the high value area will incur a 1 second penalty. Not satisfied with your performance? Try it again and see if you can do better.
